Eco-Lessons on Wind Energy: Grassroots Institute Educates Youth in Uzhhorod and Kyiv

In the spring of 2025, the Grassroots Institute conducted a series of interactive eco-lessons on the topic: “Wind energy – for or against?”. This initiative, part of the larger programs “ECO-AWARE: School of Conscious Decisions” and “Eco-Explorers: The School of Conscious Choices,” was designed to encourage young people to critically evaluate the promises and challenges of renewable energy while cultivating an ecological culture and a sense of civic responsibility.

Wind energy is often regarded by many as one of the cleanest, most sustainable, and promising sources of power. But is this narrative always true? What are the possible drawbacks to wind energy that people are often not aware of? How can wind farms affect local communities, landscapes, or the balance of ecosystems? These questions were raised during the discussions held in schools of Uzhhorod and beyond. The Grassroots Institute aimed to introduce students to the complexities of renewable energy, create space for reflection, and open debate.

The first eco-lesson took place on April 1, 2025, at Uzhhorod Lyceum No. 3, where 10th-grade students, teachers, and representatives of the Grassroots Institute gathered together to discuss the topic of wind power. Instead of relying on the assumption that wind energy is a harmless, clean, and beneficial alternative to fossil fuels, students were encouraged to consider both the benefits and the issues associated with it. The main points for the discussion were how wind farms operate, the importance of compliance with environmental regulations, and the potential problems that can arise from poorly planned or executed projects. Students also had the opportunity to examine real local examples related to wind energy. For instance, they learned about controversial plans to build wind farms on the Borzhava and Runa mountain ranges in Zakarpattia. These projects have sparked debates among environmentalists, highlighting the tension between the push for renewable energy and the need to preserve fragile ecosystems. The discussion has helped students establish a connection between global energy issues and the future of their region.

The second eco-lesson took place on May 23, 2025, at Uzhorod Lyceum No. 15, led by Olha Volodymyrivna Donets, Head of the Grassroots Institute. During this session, a discussion took place on the context of green energy in Ukraine, as well as on a global scale. Students also analyzed how Ukraine’s energy transition can contribute to the country’s post-war recovery and modernization. Another important part of the lesson was a discussion about the future of work in the energy sector, as students had the opportunity to consider new professions that may arise as demand for renewable energy expertise continues to grow. This lesson established a connection between environmental awareness and professional opportunities, highlighting that sustainability is not only about protecting nature but also about shaping the nation’s economic future.

The eco-lesson program also extended beyond Uzhhorod, conducting lessons at Kyiv Lyceum No. 179. Two 9th-grade students, Anastasiia Voloshchuk and Myroslava Mashtaliier, presented their own report on alternative energy sources during the class. The input and participation of these students demonstrated not only their interest in environmental issues but also the effectiveness of the Grassroots Institute’s educational model, which empowers students to contribute to discussions and debates. Their initiative serves as an example, demonstrating that young people are active participants capable of shaping the future direction of environmental policy and practice in Ukraine.

The partnerships with schools, teachers, and administrators who welcomed the initiative facilitated the success of these eco-lessons and helped the program come to life. The Grassroots Institute expresses its gratitude to Svitlana Sapargaliivna Fesenko, Principal of Uzhhorod Lyceum No. 3; Nataliia Yuriyivna Baran, Principal of Uzhhorod Lyceum No. 15; and Larysa Ivanivna Mamchur, Deputy Principal for Educational Work at Lyceum No. 15, for their efforts to integrate ecological education into the school curriculum. The Grassroots Institute also extends its gratitude to Nina Anatoliivna Lenska, Chemistry and Biology Teacher at Kyiv Lyceum No. 179, whose support encouraged students to present their research. These educators play a crucial role in ensuring that ecological initiatives extend beyond a single lesson and in shaping the values of young people.

In the future, the Grassroots Institute plans to expand the eco-lesson program to more schools throughout Zakarpattia and beyond, envisioning this program as the foundation for a long-term strategy to promote ecological culture among youth. Future lessons will continue to address renewable energy, as well as discuss other environmental topics, ensuring that young people are equipped with knowledge of sustainability challenges and solutions. This knowledge will aid the younger generation to become environmentally conscious citizens and make responsible decisions in both their personal lives and as future professionals, policymakers, and community leaders.

The eco-lessons are more than just classroom exercises; they are opportunities to shape the mindset of the future. The Grassroots Institute has established a platform to promote ecological awareness by engaging with students and partnering with educators. At a time when Ukraine faces not only environmental challenges but also the task of post-war reconstruction, programs like this demonstrate that sustainability must be integrated into national development. The enthusiasm, curiosity, and creativity of the students in Uzhhorod and Kyiv are proof that the next generation is ready to take on this responsibility.

For the Grassroots Institute, environmental education is not just about transferring knowledge: it is about inspiring action.
